Smurf Garden

Taking inspiration from The Magic Onions my son and I worked on a little miniature garden for those sneaky little smurfs that come around after you go to bed. (Smurf garden/fairy garden - you pick!)

It was really fun to make and rather addictive. Making tiny little furniture out of sticks and odds ends around the house was exciting! Who knew?!

 

  

DIY: No More Necklace Mess

So tired of my necklaces always being a wadded up mess like this:

 

An old corkboard was going to be tossed out at work but I took it in hopes that it would come in handy. After it sat around and gathered dust and took up room, I finally put it to good use.

I spray painted it with the only color spray paint I had; grey. Exciting!

I added thumbtacks but covered them with felt because they looked so office-y.

I gave it a ribbon border with some scrap ribbon to hide the ugly metal frame. I cut little felt squares for the corners because I just barely had enough ribbon but it didn't quite go all the way in one corner. The felt flower covers up a little gap too. It's proably overboard, but I think it works for now.

I have the tiniest bathroom off of our bedroom known to woman, so it had to go on the wall near the john. Hey, I have something to stare at while I'm "doing paperwork" right? TMI

Oh, and ignore the wretched wall paper. It's on my list of things to burn.



Now it's time to add the jewels

This is techinically my second spot to hang necklaces since I do have a small spot in the closet that I have some too. But this is a much better place to be able to actually SEE what I have rather than guessing. Or having to push scarves out of the way.

DIY: Yard Ghosts

As always, I get so excited to do crafts with my son that  you would think I was 4 years old too. This spooky craft was super duper easy, fast and cheap! YES!



You will need:

1. white garbage bag

2. permanent marker

3. scissors

4. small rubberbands

5. sticks from the yard

6. cotton balls

 STEP 1) cut medium size squares out of the garbage bags. I didn't measure anything, just eyeballed it. The bigger your square, the bigger your ghost. It's up to you.

STEP 2) put cotton balls in the middle of the square. I used about 3 cotton balls per ghost square.

STEP 3) gather bag around cotton ball and secure with rubberband. Best if you can get the rubberband around twice. Makes it nice and secure

STEP 4) have your kiddo draw a face on the ghost. My little guy is pretty good with markers so I was ok with him using the sharpie. Of course I would never leave him alone with it unless I wanted him and my table covered in black ink.

STEP 5) Begin putting the ghosts on the ends of the sticks.

 Make as many as you want! Head out to the yard and scatter them about. It should look a little sumthin like this:

At the House

Yesterday, Brian and I went to look at some houses because we are really wanting to find a place that has everything we both want. I want a yard for my son and of course, a great kitchen but I also want to find a house that has that special old world touch to it. Neither one of us want the newer, cookie cutter kind of house. Brian wants a garage so he can tinker around and a big master bedroom because he loves his king size bed. And he should. At 6' 3", he needs all the space he can when he's relaxing and trying to sleep. We found one that definitely has a lot of potential. It would need new floors and new kitchen appliances but it has great built ins in the living room and cute old kitchen cabinets that I immediately fell in love with. So in the spirit of home, I decided a post of hanging around the house was a good idea. We are going to keep on looking for that perfect place. Wish us luck! Have a great Sunday everyone!

Creek Bed

I drooled over these Dan Post boots for about a year. I would go by Discount Shoe Barn and try them on over and over and over. I even went by an took a picture of them one time. I could not bring myself to spend that much money on myself. I think Brian finally felt sorry enough for me and surprised me with them on my birthday. Bless his heart. Maybe he just couldn't take my pouty face whenever I passed by a pair of cowgirl boots not a minute longer. Or maybe he's just sweet. Or maybe they were on sale. Or maybe....the shoe gods were looking out for me...

 I love the way this one turned out because it captures the colors in the dress. It was hot and sticky when I was taking the photos and the breeze felt great.

Wednesday Diptych #31: Bijou!

Here we are again...another Wednesday! Another diptych! Man, I feel like the weeks are a blur sometimes. This week's diptych project is "bijou" which means a small, delicately worked piece. The first picture is of a crochet lace design by my great grandmother. I never had the chance to meet her. She passed away before i was born. I've only seen pictures of her. I absolutely love this lace piece. Because it is beautiful and it is my roots. I inherited it when my grandmother, her daughter, passed away. I love using this at Christmas time in the middle of a large table...it looks like a delicate snowflake. I, personally, have no idea how to crochet. And yes! I have tried it and got extremely frustrated while my friend picked it up immediately sat there and crocheted like 5 million scarves in no time. Not cool. Anyway, I believe the time it took my great grandmother to do this and the talent she had very much qualifies this as "bijou" in my book. I desperately wish I had tons more of her things that were left behind and forgotten. The second photo includes another lace piece of hers with a little bit of me and my pretty little pink flower ring. I adore that little ring.

Diptych #30: Vespertine

Happy diptych Wednesday! This week's diptych is "Vespertine" which means of, pertaining to, or occurring in the evening.
I like the way the arrows of light coming from the lamp echo the arc in our holding hands. I wanted to capture what you might feel while taking a late evening stroll with your sweetie.
The creator of this little project is taking a break next week. Next up will be "Bijou", something small, delicate, and exquisitely wrought, on August 12th.
