Father's Day @ Biltmore Estate

The hubby and I went to the Biltmore House on Sunday because they were running a buy one get one free ticket situation for Father's Day. Biltmore may not be my husband's ideal place to spend Father's Day but we were going with some other family members (my cousin and her husband, my aunt and uncle) and it was just too good of a deal to pass up. Plus I love spending time with my family and time I can. I feel like we all get so disconnected with life and daily routines. It's good to get together! My dad was going to come along too but decided against it because he has a terribly bad back and walking, stairs and huge crowds don't really mesh well with his pain level. We met him and my other cousin and her husband for dinner after our tour.

I finally got to take the Rooftop Tour that I have been dying to take. I want to take the Upstairs Downstairs tour even more because you get to peek into the lives of the butlers, maids, etc. Just like Downton Abbey! But we couldn't work that into the schedule on Sunday. Just means we need to go back again!

The views were just gorgeous! And we could not have asked for a clearer day. It was hot but the breeze was kickin!

This was the view out of a tiny little window above the Winter Garden. The screen kind of makes it look a little funky - sorry about that.

I've never seen the angles of the house. It was awesome. The balconies were pretty tiny.

The tour guide told us that when George and Edith Vanderbilt got home after their 4 month honeymoon in Italy they stood on this balcony and took in the welcome home extravaganza full of fireworks, bonfires and bands. It was the first time Edith had ever been to Biltmore!

Vanderbilt owned land as far as he could see.

I never knew the letters "G" and "V" were on every other tile on the roof line.

We had an awesome time!

The Conservatory

I'm listening to the rain hit the roof and it is calming my restless spirit. Especially after the day I've had. I had to keep my door shut at work for most of the day just to be able to complete one task in its entirety. This time of the year is horrible - everything has to be done yesterday. Oh well - work crap is boring. No one wants to hear that.
Brian and I took off to the Biltmore Estate one day for lunch and snapped a few pics at the Conservatory. It was nice to get away. It was like we slipped into another world for a few short moments in time. When we are driving up to the house, I like to picture what it was like for the Vanderbilt women to come home after traveling abroad. Were their minds buzzing with what they had to do when they got back? When the next party was and what had to get done before the guests arrived in a few days. Were they snobby? Were they even real? Its just that they seem so dreamy and far away. Hard to imagine people actually living in a life so full of decadence. Something I will never know. No complaining - I am blessed with so so many things. It's more like peeking into a foggy window watching lavish parties unfold with women in gorgeous gowns and men smoking cigars. Then young loves sneaking around this conservatory....trying to find a place to kiss....

A Little Bit of Winery

Took a couple of minutes at lunch time and went down to the Biltmore Estate Winery for a few photos. I have been meaning to do more photo shoots on the estate since it is so beautiful there but I just never take the time. Brian and I won season passes for this year and I don't think we have been quite enough! Although I think we've been about 10 times. Sometimes just to walk, sometimes just to take a slow drive and once to take Riley to the Easter egg hunt. I tried to take Riley into the house but he's not much into looking at old Vanderbilt memorablia from 1920. Of course I am drooling but all he can yell is "Mommie I have to pee!" The place has like 40 plus bathrooms and I can't find a place to take a 3 year old to pee. Thank God one of the tour guides let us slip under the velvet rope to take a short cut downstairs. The actual entrance to the estate is just about 3 minutes from my work but once you go through the gate it is about 3 miles to the house. It seems like it takes forevvver to get there. But the winery is a little bit closer than driving all the way to the house. I hadn't eaten lunch before I got there and all the delicious smells wafting from the restaurant was sooooooooo distracting!
